The British Government estimates we use 4.7 billion plastic straws a year...
Voice teachers might use hundreds of straws a month.
Singers might get through a handful of straws a day.
That's a lot of waste - and it's time to change.
6 PIANO TRACKS
We’ve included six Piano Tracks with your OB1 TOOLKIT: SOVT STRAW - that's over 20 minutes of material to start you off with exercising and warming up.
They’re a great way of checking your voice is in good shape, and they also offer a gentle warmup and stretch, even if your voice is tired.
WHAT IS SOVT ANYWAY?
SOVT stands for 'Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract' - which actually is just a really elaborate way of saying that the mouth is partially closed. This partial occlusion allows air to be reflected backward from the lips, decompressing and helping the vocal folds vibrate more easily, and with less muscular effort.
WHY IS SOVT USEFUL FOR SINGERS AND VOICE USERS?
SOVT exercises help with creating sufficient airflow as well as helping to check that the voice isn't being overworked. More importantly, SOVT is gentle enough to be used as a way of warming up the voice for singing, warming down the voice after singing, and everywhere in between - these exercises can also be used as a 'reset' button. In addition, SOVT can be used to help ease tired and fatigued vocal folds, as the exercise works to minimise the vocal fold collisions by providing a protective 'air cushion'. Exercises using the OB1 ToolKit: SOVT STRAW and a water bottle also allow for immediate visual feedback, which is invaluable for some singers who struggle to feel and place sensations within the body.
